Split a bill and settle up with UPI
Splitting a bill and paying someone back are two separate steps. BasketBalance calculates and records the shared expense. A UPI payment link can then help you open a compatible payment app on your phone with the recipient and amount filled in.
Work out each person's share
Create a group, record who paid, and choose who shares the expense. Review the group's balances to see who owes whom. For groceries, itemised splitting helps when different people bought different things.
For example, Vikram pays ₹800 for dinner shared equally with Ananya, Lily and Anne. Each person's share is ₹200. Vikram has already paid his own share, so the other three each owe him ₹200.
Use a UPI payment link
- The person receiving money adds their UPI ID to their BasketBalance profile.
- Open the relevant payment option from the group's balances or settlement flow.
- On a supported phone, open the UPI app and check the recipient and amount.
- Complete the payment in that app.
- Return to BasketBalance and record the payment using Settle-up Payment.
On a desktop, the app can show the recipient's payment details instead of opening a phone app. Available behaviour depends on the device and installed payment apps.
A payment link is not a payment confirmation
Opening a UPI app does not mean money has moved. BasketBalance does not ask for your UPI PIN and does not automatically verify that a UPI transfer succeeded. Check the result in your payment app before recording a settlement. If a transfer fails or is still pending, do not mark it paid simply because the payment app opened.
Keep the group history clear
Record the amount that was actually paid and the correct recipient. Partial payments can leave a remaining balance, so compare the settlement with the amount owed. Keeping expense records and payment records together helps the group follow the numbers without treating the expense tracker as a bank statement.
You can also record a settlement made outside UPI. BasketBalance tracks the group's records; it is not a payment processor.
